Rare Boswellia bullata - Incense Resin from Socotra
Boswellia bullata is a relatively small species of frankincense-yielding tree, populating the north-western portion of Socotra. When burned, its produces piney, floral, woody-citrus smoke, conveying refreshing notes of bergamot and cedar.
Socotra, an island in the Indian Ocean, is home to several unique plant species. Among these are several dwarf species that naturally produce frankincense (Boswellia) and myrrh (Commiphora). Boswellia bullata is notoriously hard to source, though its endemic population can sustainably produce small quantities of high-grade frankincense. My local partners harvest the resin with exquisite knowledge and care. They monitor populations, help to protect trees, and aid propagation wherever they can, adhering to strict local customs intended to preserve the sustainability of the ancient incense resin trade.
